The office of Queensland Greens Senator Penny Allman-Payne is seeking applications for a full-time ongoing Policy and Parliamentary Advisor, based in the Senator’s Parliament House office in Canberra, ACT.
About the position
Reporting to the Chief of Staff, you will occasionally be required to travel to the electorate office in Gladstone, Central Queensland, and may also be required to support the Senator elsewhere around the country.

The key duties of the position are, but are not limited to:
- Managing the Senator’s Parliamentary agenda, including preparing for parliament, Senate estimates, the federal budget, committees and senate inquiries; providing advice on legislation and amendments; writing briefs, reports, private members bills, motions, and speeches; and managing the Parliament House office, including the Senator’s schedule during sitting weeks
- Building and maintaining stakeholder relationships
- Conducting research to develop policy solutions across the Senator’s portfolios
- Contributing to policy development with the Australian Greens Leaders Office, Australian Greens Policy team and Australian Greens Policy Coordinating Committee
- Working with the broader team to ensure parliamentary interventions and tactics support our campaign goals.
The ideal applicant should possess the following skills, qualifications, and experience:
- Strong understanding of the Australian political system, the political and media landscape in Australia and Queensland, and the issues shaping the national debate
- Highly developed organisational and time management skills, including flexibility and ability to meet tight deadlines and evolving priorities as part of a small team
- Demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication and liaison skills, and experience in managing stakeholder relationships
- Strong analytical skills and demonstrated capacity to comprehend complex issues, think strategically and adapt to rapidly changing circumstances
- Excellent writing skills. Examples attached to your application are encouraged.
- An ability to work as part of a team as well as independently with minimal supervision
- An ability to work some irregular hours and to travel interstate as required
- A demonstrated commitment to and understanding of Australian Greens values and policies
- An existing knowledge of federal parliamentary processes is desirable
- Relevant tertiary qualification and/or experience.
Employment conditions:
The position is offered under the Members of Parliament (Staff) Act 1984 and conditions are outlined in the Commonwealth Members of Parliament Staff Enterprise Agreement 2024-27 which include:
- A commencing salary of between $83,138 and $89,793 will be negotiated depending on experience and relevant skills
- An additional electorate allowance of up to $18,576 may be considered in recognition of, and as compensation for, reasonable additional hours of work and any travel requirements
- Relocation assistance, studies assistance and paid study leave may also be available (subject to eligibility requirements)
- An employer superannuation contribution of 15.4% will be payable.

- An initial probationary period of three months will apply and may be subject to extension
- The successful applicant may be required to undergo a National Police History Check
- Staff may be subject to automatic cessation triggers in accordance with Section 14 of the MOP(S) Act
