Gas Export Tax Now

To the Prime Minister of Australia:

We, the undersigned, are calling for a national plebiscite so that voters can send a direct message to the Australian Parliament.

Let the Australian public decide the following question: "Should the Australian Parliament introduce a 25% tax on Australia’s gas exports?”

By adding your name to the plebiscite call, you agree to allow us to keep you updated on the campaign and submit it to be tabled in the Federal Parliament.

Multinational gas corporations are ripping us off, and Prime Minister Albanese is letting them. We need to remind him that he works for the Australian people, not the gas lobby. Demand a national vote for a minimum 25% gas export tax now.

MAKE LABOR LISTEN TO VOTERS, NOT THE GAS LOBBY

Multinational gas corporations are ripping us off. Over half of Australia’s gas is exported without paying a cent in royalties, and these companies make billions while ordinary Aussies are told to tighten our belts.

But if we taxed gas exports, we could make over $17 billion a year. Money for schools, hospitals and the transition to clean, secure energy.

That’s why the Greens are fighting for a minimum 25% export tax on gas revenue.

Labor keeps choosing corporate donors over you. Companies like Santos give thousands in donations to the major parties - while paying $0 in corporate tax.

Meanwhile, nearly every Australian Resources Minister since 2001 has gone on to work for a fossil fuel company. These aren’t donations, they’re investments.

Let’s break the grip that the gas lobby has on our politics.

When the Parliament is failing the people, the people deserve the opportunity to act. Join us to demand a national vote on a gas export tax!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a plebiscite?

A plebiscite is a “national vote to decide a question” (Parliamentary Education Office), in this case: "should Australia introduce a minimum 25% gas export tax?"

The government would choose the exact wording of the question.

A plebiscite measures the level of public support on a matter – and gives every Australian a chance to have their say.

If most Australians voted "Yes" to a gas export tax, that would be an undeniable mandate for the Government.

An example of a plebiscite is the 2017 postal survey on marriage equality, in which 62% of Australians voted yes. Later that year, Parliament respected the majority by voting to allow same-sex marriage.

What is the Petroleum Resource Rent Tax and why do we want to get rid of it?

The Petroleum Resource Rent Tax (PRRT) is the current system used to try and tax gas exports, but it has utterly failed to deliver for Australia. Riddled with massive loopholes, it collects virtually no meaningful revenue from the multi-billion dollar gas industry.

The result is a national scandal: the government collects more money from things like beer excise and student HECS debt repayments than it does from all gas exports combined. It's a broken system that must be replaced.

Who pays more tax than gas exports?

Multinational gas corporations pay less tax on their billions in exports than many everyday Australians, including:

  1. Nurses
  2. Teachers
  3. Students with HECS debt
  4. Retail workers
