AI Data Centres

STOP AI Data Centres

Labor has rolled out the red carpet for hyperscale AI data centres.

AI data centres have a massive environmental footprint. They're noisy, energy-guzzling industrial monsters that use huge amounts of water. And they'll keep Victoria hooked on coal and gas for longer.

When tech billionaires want data centres, Labor finds them a shortcut. They're fast-tracking new data centres and sidestepping Councils and community consultation.

Labor puts Big Tech profits ahead of our communities. And they're putting our environment, First Nations cultural heritage, and Victoria's renewable energy targets at risk.

The Greens want to stop new AI data centres, until we have laws that protect our communities and environment.

Explore our plan for AI Data Centres

A moratorium on all new AI data centres

The Greens are calling for a moratorium on all new AI data centres until communities have actually had an opportunity to consider the risks and benefits, and create strong laws to protect people and the planet over big tech profit.

Compensation for affected communities

Communities are already paying the price of Labor’s data centre frenzy while big tech makes massive profits.

In addition to placing a moratorium on new AI data centres, the Greens will make data centre companies compensate residents already affected by existing facilities, including for noise, pollution and any loss of value to their properties.

Genuine local community consultation

Labor is fast tracking approvals for hyperscale data centres and bypassing local community and council engagement.

The Greens want everyone to be able to have their say about the shape of their community. That means transparent and meaningful engagement, ensuring governments can’t ignore the impacts on the local communities, especially air quality and noise levels.

Protect the transition and keep power bills low

Data centres shouldn’t get free access to our power or slow our transition to renewables.

The Greens will make all data centres run off 100% newly built renewable energy, including banning gas turbines and diesel back up generators, and requiring them to make an additional contribution to help the transition to renewables.

Strict environmental and water standards

AI data centres use massive amounts of water and can harm native grasslands and reduce biodiversity.

The Greens will make all data centres run off 100% newly built renewable energy, including banning gas turbines and diesel back up generators, and requiring them to make an additional contribution to help the transition to renewables.

A comprehensive AI Act to protect workers, artists, and our data

We need an AI Act that protects workers from unfair job losses and surveillance at work, stops the great AI art theft and forces big companies to pay creatives fairly, choice and transparency when it comes to our personal data, and ban the use of Victorian data centres for autonomous weapons.
