It's time for real change

The Greens plan

The Greens have a plan for Victoria: to make life affordable and put people before profit.

We’ll pay for it by making big corporations pay their fair share.

Top 5 Platform areas

Make Housing Affordable

Cut stamp duty

Stamp duty is a huge upfront cost that makes it harder to buy, move or downsize.

You shouldn’t have to drain your savings to pay a tax bill before even getting the keys to your home.

The Greens will cut stamp duty, saving home buyers $60,000 on the price of an average home.

We’ll pay for it by making the big banks and ultra-wealthy property investors pay their fair share.

Banks making billions in profit, and investors with more than $5 million in homes they don’t even live in, can afford to pay a bit more so everyone else pays less.

Build public housing

No matter who you are, or where you come from, you deserve a safe and affordable place to call home.

Public housing provides that genuinely secure and affordable safety net for those who need it.

But Labor plans to demolish all 44 public housing towers in Victoria and hand valuable public land to property developers for private profit. The Greens have been fighting alongside public housing communities to save their homes while Labor tries to destroy them.

The Greens will make sure there are public homes for everyone who needs one.

  • We will more than double the number of public homes by building 88,000 new homes, and maintain and upgrade existing public housing.
  • We will make an initial commitment of $4 billion towards building, maintaining and upgrading public housing, with more invested over time.

Freeze & cap rent increases

Renting should be affordable. But rents keep rising and renters are falling further behind.

Every year more of your pay goes straight to your landlord’s pockets.

Under Labor, property investors can put up your rent by any amount. Over the past 5 years, rents have risen 2.5 times faster than wages.

Renters should be able to afford their home, and have still enough to enjoy life and even save for the future.

The Greens will freeze and cap rent increases so they never rise faster than wages, saving the average renter $30,000 over 5 years.

The Greens ended rental bidding and no grounds evictions. We will make rent caps a reality too.

Bring Down Costs

Free & frequent public transport

The Greens secured 2 months of free public transport, which saved Victorians over $440. Now we want to make it permanent.

As bills and fuel prices rise, it should be free and easy to catch public transport.

The Greens will make public transport free for good.

We will run trains and trams more often, and make our buses faster with more direct routes across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Make dental free

Everyone should be able to afford the dentist. But a third of people don't go until it's an emergency because it's too expensive.

The Greens will expand our public dental system so all Victorians can see the dentist for free.

We'll tax the big gambling corporations to pay for it.

Gambling corporations make billions from working people's wages. By taxing them, we'll invest $3 billion in public dental clinics, preventative care and building the workforce. So every Victorian can have healthy teeth.

Victoria needs a dental policy with teeth, not empty election promises.

End rip-off energy bills, bring energy back into public hands

For decades, Labor and the Liberals have let private coal and gas corporations rip us off on our bills.

Our energy system was publicly-owned until it was sold off in the 1990s.

Since then, power bills have skyrocketed while fossil fuel companies rake in profits and lobby to block climate action.

The Greens will bring down bills by cutting out corporate profit and returning our energy system to public hands, where it belongs.

The Greens will:

  • Establish a public energy retailer within the State Electricity Commission, cutting out corporate profit to bring down your bills.
  • Invest in a big build of publicly-owned renewables, putting solar on schools, public housing and government buildings so savings go back to Victorians, not corporate shareholders.
  • Legislate to stop essential services ever being sold off again.
  • Introduce a $3000 Greens Power voucher for renters and homeowners, to spend on solar, batteries, insulation, efficient electric hot water, reverse-cycle air con, induction cooktops and draught-proofing
  • Fast-track plug-in balcony solar for renters and apartments, deliver free energy assessments for renters, and offer up to $3,000 off electric cars, e-bikes and two-way chargers.

We’ll pay for it by doubling royalties on coal and gas companies, and making big banks and gambling corporations pay their fair share of tax.

End Labor’s coal & gas, build renewables

The major parties have failed us on climate.

Labor in Victoria has opened 5 new fossil fuel projects this year, even drilling near the iconic 12 Apostles. The Liberals and One Nation are no better: they want even more coal, gas and logging.

Opening new fossil fuels makes climate change worse and we all pay for it, with higher energy and insurance bills, more fires, floods and drought.

The Greens are the only ones serious about climate action, with a plan to replace Labor's coal and gas with cheaper, publicly-owned renewables to permanently cut your bills and climate pollution. We will:

  • Ban gas drilling in Victoria's oceans and close the state's remaining coal-fired power stations earlier, replacing them with a huge build of publicly-owned renewables.
  • Ban fossil fuel donations to politicians and double taxes and royalties on coal and gas.
  • Put solar on Victorian schools and public housing estates, and make big polluters fund clean-up for communities hit by climate disasters.

Fossil fuel corporations caused the problem, they should pay for it.

Stop AI data centres

Labor has rolled out the red carpet for big overseas tech corporations to build hyperscale AI data centres across Victoria.

AI data centres have a massive environmental footprint. They're noisy, energy-guzzling industrial monsters that use huge amounts of water. And they'll keep Victoria hooked on coal and gas for longer.

Labor puts Big Tech profits ahead of our communities. They're fast-tracking these AI data centres on land meant for housing, and right near people’s homes. And they're putting our environment, First Nations cultural heritage, and Victoria's renewable energy targets at risk.

We shouldn’t let tech billionaires decide what gets built in our communities. Victorians deserve a say.

The Greens are calling for a moratorium on all new AI data centres, until we have laws that protect our communities and environment.

We'll also make tech corporations compensate residents who are already living with the damage that data centres cause.

Stronger protection for forests & habitat

A healthy environment isn't just a nice-to-have. Clean air, fresh water, functioning ecosystems – these are the foundations of our health, our food, our economy, our culture. For First Nations peoples, Country is not a backdrop to life. It is life.

But Labor is treating nature and wildlife as something to be pillaged and destroyed for short-term profit. Over the last 4 years, Labor has slashed funding for nature protection, and backtracked on promises to create new national parks and fix our wildlife laws. The Liberals and One Nation want to go even further in destroying the environment we all rely on.

We need a fundamental shift in how our government values and invests in nature.

The Greens will:

  • Reverse Labor’s cuts and invest significantly more in environment funding and workforce. Restructure the Department to put nature and First Nations knowledge first, ahead of corporate profit.
  • Fix Victoria’s wildlife laws to protect animals and habitat.
  • End duck shooting.
  • Close Labor’s loopholes in our anti-logging laws, and protect Victoria’s native forests for good in new national parks and reserves, with Traditional Owner rights and management front-and-centre.

Money Out of Politics

Ban corporate donations to politicians & stop corruption

Nothing will change if we keep swapping out one corporate-owned party for another.

Labor, Liberals and One Nation all take donations from billionaires and big corporations. That's who they're working for.

When big money has a seat at the table, ordinary Victorians get left behind. It's why big corporations rip you off and make huge profits, while you struggle to afford the basics.

The Greens will get money out of politics by banning big corporate donations to politicians.

We'll stop vested interests, like the gambling and property industries, and fossil fuel corporations, from buying influence.

We'll also stop corruption by giving Victoria's anti-corruption body the powers it needs to keep politicians honest.

Public services for people, not profit

Labor and the Liberals have spent years selling off the public services we rely on to corporations. We end up paying more for worse services, because the need to make corporate profit comes at our expense.

Labor and the Liberals have sold off our electricity, roads, port, public housing land and even some hospitals – and now they want to sell off Melbourne Water. Even our drinking water isn't safe from privatisation.

At the same time, Victoria has the lowest-funded public schools and public housing in the country, with hospitals under strain, crumbling roads, breaking-down fire-trucks and underfunded mental health services. This is the result of choices Labor and the Liberals have made.

The Greens believe public services should work for the public, not corporate profit. In a society as wealthy as ours, we can properly fund good-quality public services for all if we make the big banks, gambling companies and big corporations pay their fair share of tax.

The Greens will:

  • Introduce legislation to stop public assets being sold off.
  • Bring road maintenance and electricity back into public hands, cutting costs and improving services by removing corporate profit.
  • Tax the big banks, gambling companies and big corporations, so we can properly fund public schools, community health centres, public transport, homelessness and mental health services.

Treaty & First Nations justice

The Greens proudly support Treaty with First Nations communities. This principle underpins all our policy positions.

Our plan: First Nations Justice >

It’s time to elect someone who will fight for real change.

Labor and the Liberals have spent years putting their own power ahead of people, and selling off the public services we all rely on to corporations.

That’s why things are so expensive, and why politics isn’t working for you.

The Greens are here to change things.

Unlike Labor, the Liberals and One Nation, we don’t take dodgy corporate donations. The Greens are 100% funded by the community and we’re fighting for you.

The Greens will tax the big banks, gambling companies and big corporations to make housing affordable and fund the public services we all need.

A better future is possible. Fed up with the old parties? Vote 1 Greens.
